Back in December I attended the VIP Preview & the Grand Opening of the Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit flagship upscale resale store in Canton. It was a really fun night getting a sneak peek of the store before anyone else, and best of all I got to meet Suze from Miss Vinyl Ahoy! She & I both came back the next morning for the grand opening (which was PACKED!) to nab the great pieces we scouted the night before. Suze beat me to the opening and tried to secure the leopard print swing coat I had fallen in love with at the preview party, but some lucky lady had already tossed it in her cart. Sadness, but Suze was awesome enough to find & hold on to the vintage Saks Fifth Avenue hat box that I also wanted. Score! At .99 cents I’d say it was the best thrift I’ve ever made – love it! Check out the post Suze did on the event, her pix are WAY better than mine.
While I’m not a regular thrifter, I must say that this store is making me a convert. Besides my lovely hatbox I’ve seen great pieces from Christian Dior, Calvin Klein, H&M, Karen Kane, Evan Picone, Nine West and a ton of others. The store has seen me a number of times since it opened and I’m thinking I’ll be down there again tomorrow for their Super Bowl XLV-inspired Super “Bowl” & 99 Cent Clothing Sale.
Tomorrow, Super Bowl Sunday (2.6) shop from noon to 6pm and take advantage of the fun deals like XLV (45) cents off the price of any bowl in the store, plus look for the gold-tagged clothing items they’re only 99 cents!
- WHEN: Noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011
- WHERE: Goodwill Flagship Upscale Resale Store 41937 Ford Road Canton, MI 48187 (734) 981-1692
- WHY: “We’re looking to have some fun on Sunday and remind the people of the Detroit area that our new store is here to help our friends and neighbors earn jobs,” said Jeff Ukrainec, director of donated goods for Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit. “We’re offering ‘super’ deals on bowls and clothing as part of the sale, but we think new customers will be especially pleased with the variety of other high quality items and with our upscale resale experience.”
Proceeds from the Goodwill “Super” Bowl (and 99-cent Clothing) Sale support Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit employment education and training programs that help unemployed Metro Detroiters earn jobs. And what could be better than that?
Despite January being um…well, January, it ended up being a really great month and if it’s any indication of what the rest of 2011 is going to be like, I say BRING. IT. ON.
I say that because in that last two weeks of January I won 3 online contests! That’s right, count ’em, 3! I know, it’s not like I won a Powerball jackpot or anything, but it’s the little things in life that thrill me and $60 worth of haircare, $75 worth of jewelry, and 2 tickets to the DIA’s Fakes, Forgeries and Mysteries exhibit make me smile. A really BIG smile.
Check out all my loot!
My winning streak started out with an awesome “Winter Hair Survival” prize pack from Marlo Does Hair. The prize pack included a Redken Real Control Shampoo (love!), It’s a 10 Miracle Hair Mask (so nourishing!), and It’s a 10 Miracle Shine Spray (smells amazing!). I’ve been using all 3 products since I picked them up at Eleven West Salon & Spa in downtown Ypsi where Marlo works, and I am really enjoying them, especially the It’s a 10 Miracle Shine Spray – it adds a great sheen to my dull winter hair and like I said, it smells divine!
I love Marlo’s business card too – direct & to the point!
Check out Marlo Does Hair for other great contests like this one as well as celebrity hair trends, product reviews, and more. You can find Marlo Does Hair on Facebook and Twitter, and if you’re in the Ypsi area you should definitely get in to Eleven West Salon and see Marlo, after all, she does hair.
I met Alaina last fall at the #EPICtweetup (a celebration for Team Detroit, the winners of the 2010 Chevy SXSW Road Trip Challenge, but that’s a story for another time…) and since then we have remained in touch mostly on twitter, but I also subscribe to Alaina’s great blog, Something Magic. Alaina is so creative and so talented her blog really is something magic. I mean she cooks, she bakes, she is a wonderful photographer and writer, and now I think she’s even making her own jewelry!
Alaina is also a Lia Sophia consultant and has been kind enough to keep me in the bling loop! Recently she invited me to a Lia Sophia Rock Star party, which unfortunately I couldn’t attend, but by RSVP-ing I was entered into a contest Alaina was holding and ended up winning $75 worth of jewelry! Score! I had recently perused the catalog & made some Christmas purchases so I had a few items in mind already. I can never have enough earrings and so I picked out the 3 silver pair above. As a former Lia Sophia consultant I miss having regular access to the many great deals and incentives they offer, as well the excitement of a new catalog…like the just launched Spring/Summer 2011.
Flip through it if you haven’t done so already and get in touch with Alaina if you’d like to host a show or just purchase some fun & affordable jewelry. Be sure to check out Alaina’s blog too, Something Magic.
I follow the DIA on Twitter and saw a tweet come through recently about a current exhibit; Fakes, Forgeries and Mysteries. This is an exhibit I’ve been meaning to get down to Detroit to see so this contest was just the ticket (sorry, I couldn’t resist)! All I had to do was watch a video on the exhibit (check it out here) and be one of the first five people to respond with the correct answer to some question I can’t recall now, but no matter. I won.
I’m out of town next week, but look forward to an afternoon in mid-February of Fakes, Forgeries & Mysteries followed up by Detroit’s best mac n’ cheese.
- More markdowns happening at TENDER – now up to 60% off (although we spotted some 75% off items online) European & American designer clothing collections, accessories, and shoes! Located at 271 West Maple, Birmingham.
THIS JUST IN…
We just received word that one of our favorite Birmingham shops, Caruso Caruso, has taken further reductions on an already great sale! Stop in and save on great labels like J Brand, Seven, Hudson, True Religion, Current/Elliott and more!
SHOP LOCAL & SAVE
A couple Sundays ago I packed up the kiddies & headed down to the Fillmore Detroit for the Detroit Urban Craft Fair. It was my first time to the event, known locally as DUCF, so I wasn’t sure how kid-friendly it would be, but thanks to a passing tweet & a great post from Mike Han of StreetCultureMash, I was able to check out the event and show my kids some photos before we got there. Once my boys saw the photos of the paper Street Fighters (below), Jason Gibner’s paintings, and a floating cardboard delivery truck they were sold.

The Fillmore Detroit is a great place for an event and I loved being able to expose my kids to a really cool event, in a really beautiful building. While the boys weren’t into a leisurely stroll through the event they did find their favorites and got down to spending their allotted $20, while I grabbed business cards & urls to shop online later.
DUCF from the balcony & my son, Myles, pretending his Jason Gibner spaceship (his first art purchase!) is attacking.
One of the cards I picked up was actually a coupon (hello lover!) for 10% off at Bureau of Urban Living and City Bird – two local design shops I have been dying to check out. The stores are located next door to each other in Midtown’s Canfield Lofts (460 West Canfield St.) and offer shoppers “an array of modern accessories for the home + office” and “Detroit-themed housewares, accessories and paper goods as well as work by more than 75 other artists and designers”, respectively.
Local Deal: Both Bureau of Urban Living & City Bird have been kind enough to offer us the same 10% off, just mention The Sale Rack and the savings are yours! The discount is good now through December 24, 2010 and you can shop both great stores daily from 11am – 7pm! This is a great opportunity to shop local, save, and cross some names off your holiday gift list.
A SNEAK PEEK AT TAUBMAN CENTERS’ ICE PALACE
You may have heard me talking about the Taubman ICE PALACE recently, and that’s because I’m working with them to get the word out about the event which is happening at 16 Taubman Centers across the country tomorrow night (11.12.10) at 7pm est. I’ve read the press releases and heard all about the plans for the ICE PALACE, but this afternoon I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek and personal tour of the Great Lakes Crossing Outlets’ Ice Palace experience from Marketing Director, Melissa Morang, and let me tell you it looks amazing!
They have really created an interactive holiday “experience” around the new movie The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader. My four year old son happened to be with me today for the sneak peek and while he is too young to have seen the Narnia movies he was completely entranced by the set-up – the small globes depicting scenes from the new movie, the ice arch where he could leave his handprint, and especially inside the dome where there was falling snow, lights, and scenes from the movie being played (on gorgeous flat panel TVs!) encircling the room.
This event launches tomorrow night at 7pm EST at 16 Taubman Centers across the US (see my earlier post for those locations) and at 3 centers right here in Michigan: Great Lakes Crossing Outlets, Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi, and Fairlane Town Center in Dearborn.
The first 200 children at Great Lakes Crossing Outlet will receive an Ice Pack that includes a LED magic wand (to help illuminate the Ice Palace, coupons to retailers at GLCO, and a free 5×7 photo with Santa (one per family).
Remember to get there early – they’ll start distributing Ice Packs at 6pm. There will be clowns to entertain the children, strolling carolers to get us all in the holiday spirit, Bar Louie will have hot chocolate for the kiddies and the live simulcast from Los Angeles with two of the actors from the movie will begin at 7pm. By 7:30pm we should be hearing Ho Ho Ho from the other star of the event, Santa Claus!
Oh, I almost forgot! Adults will have the chance to win one of 2 $500 Great Lakes Crossing Outlets gift certificates that will be awarded directly after the simulcast & Santa’s arrival. So be sure to enter this amazing contest at the registration table. Who wouldn’t love an extra $500 to spend at the holidays?! I know I sure would!
If you can’t make the opening event tomorrow night (but you should, you really, really should!) the Ice Palace and Santa will be there through the holidays (Mon-Sat 10am – 8pm & Sun 11am – 6pm, with extended hours the week before Christmas). For more info on all the great things happening at my favorite outlet mall (and the biggest indoor outlet mall in the state!), visit the Great Lakes Crossing Outlets web site.
Take a look at a few more of the photos I snapped there today…the magic awaits!
A PICTURE’S WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS
Still haven’t found the right photographer for your family pictures? It seems as though they’re either too expensive or the photos are too staged and posed. But that’s not the case with Caracature Creations Photography. Full disclosure: Cara is my sorority sister but I promise you will love her work too. I’m no expert but for some reason the color in her photos are brighter, the kids are happier, and life just seems perfect.
She takes animated, casual and stylish photos that make the subjects look totally relaxed. Her pictures with kids especially capture a carefree and playful attitude that comes as a natural response from the way she relates to them. She manages to catch the simplest moment and make it somehow unique.
Currently, her sitting fee is $125 but it will go up in December and Cara is booked through the end of the year. Of course, we always love to bring you guys a deal so for the month of November, if you pay the current sitting fee of $125, you can book a session anytime from January 2012 through June 30, 2012. To clarify, you will pay the lower price now for a photo shoot next year that would cost you more if you paid for it at that time. Based out of the metro Detroit area, she is willing to travel within a reasonable distance (maybe an hour or so) and can even make it to the Grand Rapids area in some cases. If you want to book a shoot, contact Cara by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
FASHION IN DETROIT: FOR THE BOYS
Last Saturday, Nicole and I attended the second day of Fashion in Detroit at the Motor City Casino. We had a great time last year when it was held in a tent at the Detroit Zoo and we correctly figured that this year we would be much more comfortable in a warm, dry building watching the models walk the runway. This year, there were a number of designers like Moosejaw, Motor City Denim, Prophetik by Jeff Garner and English Laundry (shown on Friday) that offered men’s fashion. It was great to see so much in the way of men’s clothing as part of Fashion in Detroit.
The show for Michigan-based Moosejaw was fun and thoroughly entertaining with each model showing off their own special dance move once they got to the end of the runway. Although Moosejaw is known for their outdoor clothing and gear, the models wore mostly neutral clothing for the men with pops of color in socks, tees, hoodies and even headbands. It was a bit of an unexpected 80s twist on the laid back looks we all turn to for the weekends.
By some funny sort of coincidence, Moosejaw just happens to be celebrating their 18th Anniversary with 20% off (almost) everything until November 3 and we just had to share it with you. Stock up for the winter with brands like The North Face, Marmot, Patagonia, Arcteryx, Sorel and more.

AN AFTERNOON OF STYLE IN ANN ARBOR
After a recent lunch at Ann Arbor’s Tomukun Noodle Bar (two words: Pork Buns) with my fabulous sister-in-law, I stopped by the unique shopping destination that is Bivouac. While the store might be best known for being an outdoorsman’s paradise, it’s the hip, high-end apparel and handbags that get me through the door. Oh who am I kidding? It’s the high-end apparel on sale that gets me through the door & rifling through the racks.
This particular day Bivouac was on the agenda because housed in its basement is Ojen’s State Street Alterations and I have had a new pair of Kasil jeans that needed tailoring (35″ inseam – wth?) hanging in my closet for 6 months. Rumor has it that Ojen is the best when it comes to altering denim, especially when you want to keep the original hem, and from the speed with which she folded & pinned one pant leg so it fell perfectly to the floor, I’d say she’s been doing this for awhile. My jeans will be ready in a week and I’ll be sure to snap a photo or two of the final product then.
I don’t get to shop Ann Arbor very often, but when I do I make a point to visit Bivouac’s denim lounge. As I was already in the building it was just a short walk across the main sales floor and up a flight of stairs to the open loft that houses their huge selection of designer denim. Bootcut, skinny, boyfriend, capri, wide leg, jeggings, and more are stacked neatly on industrial racks around the large space. I immediately scanned the room for the Sale section and found shelves of jeans, in many sizes, and all at 50% off! Score.
Before I could start tearing the rack apart, a lovely girl named Julie showed up and asked me what she could help me find. I gave her my size (none of your business!) and the style & wash I prefer and she whipped out a half-dozen pairs for me to try on…William Rast, 7 For All Mankind, Current/Elliott, Anoname, and Joe’s. I prefer a dark-wash, bootcut jean but also wanted to try on some other styles for a change, so I had Julie add a boyfriend and a couple pairs of skinny jeans to the mix.
After a bit of jumping around in the dressing room, I found my deal of the day. A pair of William Rast Stella “Straight With Boot” jeans in a medium wash for only $85. They fit really well and are insanely comfortable. I couldn’t wait to wear them, so these pix are straight out of the dryer. And for the record, my body + skinny jeans = hot mess.
Right now, in celebration of their 40th anniversary they’re having a 20% off sale on select merchandise, like Skinny Cargos.
If you can’t make it into Bivouac to check out the Denim Lounge and other great women’s fashions, stop by their online shop and give the Sale section a click. There are great savings to be had on Linq, Splendid, 291, Michael Stars, and more. If you’re on Twitter or Facebook and love to shop, make sure to follow them for exclusive deals and events happening in-store & online.
